The District was formed in 1975 through the Land Conservation Committee and then the Chippewa County Board, which established the District under Wisconsin state statute 33, subchapter IV "Public Inland lake Protection and Rehabilitation Districts". The District is registered with the State of Wisconsin as "Long Lake Inland Lake Management District". The District encompasses each riparian landowner of Long, Herde, and Dark lakes in the Town of Sampson, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, USA.
